Review: The Girl Who Fell Beneath The Sea

Rating: 4.5

Author: Axie Oh  Release Date: February 22, 2022

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea starts with Mina looking for her brother during a storm and telling of the love her brother has for Shim Cheong, who is to be sacrificed. Mina sees the love her brother has for Shim Cheong and knows that her brother would die for her, so she sacrifices herself instead and jumps into the ocean. She ends up in the spirit realm, where a whirlwind of events takes her through love, growth, change, and familial ties.

I love Mina. She’s a main character that I found myself quickly taking to and rooting for. Her love for her family and what she is willing to do to help those around her is truly admirable. The characters grow together and eventually support each other, becoming a family. The Sea God’s backstory and love for his people intertwined well with Mina’s story. Each story had an underlying theme of choosing those you love and sacrificing yourself to the point of losing yourself and finding yourself again.  I enjoyed Shin and Mina’s budding relationship and how it blossomed into something beautiful. The way I was pulled into frustration at the Sea God’s inability to face himself and, in the end, tying into a story that left me surprised. I loved the richness of the world and how you could visualize the spirit realm. It was a beautiful love story of family, friendship, and finding yourself and your person.
